20 Book Halls in Hamburg Remain Open Over Christmas - 20 Book Halls in Hamburg Remain Open Over Christmas
Hamburg’s public libraries will adjust their schedules over the Christmas holidays. While 20 out of 32 branches stay open, 13 locations—including the Central Library—will close completely. Four others will operate with shorter hours on December 24.
The Central Library and 12 smaller branches will shut their doors for the festive break. This leaves 20 libraries across the city still accessible to visitors.
Four branches—Altona, Niendorf, Volksdorf, and Winterhude—will have limited opening times. On December 24, they will close at midday but remain open until then. The rest of the open libraries will keep their usual hours, offering borrowing and reading services as normal. Visitors can use the Flexibib system for self-service checkouts during this period. The decision on which libraries stay open falls under **Bücherhallen Hamburg**, managed by the city’s culture authority (**Behörde für Kultur und Medien**).
The changes mean most residents will still have access to library services over Christmas. Self-service options will help maintain convenience for borrowers. The reduced hours and closures apply only to specific branches, ensuring continued availability across much of the city.
