77-Year-Old Professor Aims to Break World Motorcycle Record

At 77, retired professor Steven Barnett is set to break the record as the oldest man to motorcycle around the world. His ambitious journey will cover 50,000 miles across 27 countries, including France, Australia, and Peru. Inspired by a younger adventurer, Barnett has spent years preparing for this challenge.

Barnett's passion for motorcycles began decades ago. Over the past 50 years, he has ridden through nearly 80 countries, eventually visiting all 193 UN-recognised countries. His latest adventure, however, will push him further than ever before.

The idea took shape after he read about Bridget McCutchen, who became the youngest woman to solo circumnavigate the globe by motorcycle. McCutchen's achievement motivated Barnett to attempt his own record. His wife of 43 years, Karen, has stood by him, offering unwavering support throughout the planning.

For this trip, Barnett purchased a new Suzuki DR650 and modified it for endurance. A larger fuel tank and reinforced suspension were added to handle the gruelling route. To meet Guinness World Record rules, he must use the same bike for the entire journey and document every stage.

Accommodation along the way will include hotels, hostels, and guest houses. Camping, however, is off the table—Barnett prefers not to sleep on the ground. He has been sharing updates on social media, where his adventure has already inspired others to chase their own dreams.

The journey is expected to take at least a year. Starting in Madrid, Barnett will cross continents, facing diverse terrain and weather conditions.

Barnett's attempt will test his endurance and determination. If successful, he will set a new benchmark for older adventurers. The trip also highlights his lifelong love for motorcycling and exploration.
