A Look at the Monarchy in Brief

The Royal House at Schachen, a UNESCO World Heritage site since July 2025, is set to open its doors to visitors from July 7th, 2025. Located in the picturesque town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, this categorised castle sits majestically at an altitude of over 1800 meters, offering a challenging yet rewarding hike for those seeking adventure.

Nestled in the breathtaking Bavarian Alps, the Royal House can only be reached on foot, either from Elmau (approximately a three-hour hike) or Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The journey is part of the experience, providing visitors with a chance to immerse themselves in nature and appreciate the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Once you arrive, guided tours offer an insight into the rich history and stories that the Royal House holds. These tours are available daily, at 11, 13, 14, and 15 o'clock, and must be arranged in advance through booking. The tours cater to a diverse visitor base, offering guides in multiple languages.

The guided tours last for an average duration of the tour time specified, providing ample opportunity to explore the unique architecture and historical significance of the Royal House. Visits to the Royal House are only possible as part of these guided tours, ensuring that each visitor has a comprehensive and informative experience.

It is recommended that visitors arrive 30-45 minutes before closing to ensure they have enough time to fully appreciate the Royal House. During the summer season, visitors should expect long waiting times, so it's advisable to plan ahead and book tours in advance.

Two price categories exist for tickets: P1 for regular adult tickets and P2 for concessions, including groups of 15 or more, company outing groups (with authorization), members of certain German art and professional associations, and students or Goethe-Institut participants. All concession tickets for groups must be purchased simultaneously and invoiced by the tour guide.

The Royal House at Schachen is a must-visit attraction for tourists from around the world, offering a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty. With its opening in July 2025, visitors can now experience this remarkable site for themselves. However, it's essential to plan for the hike and book tours ahead to avoid waiting and ensure a smooth visit.
