A recent study found that 61% of people could not distinguish AI-generated travel images from real photos on platforms like Yahoo Finance. Scammers exploit this by creating fake booking sites and hotel pages that appear genuine. Deepfake technology is also being used to impersonate hotel staff, tricking victims into sharing credit card details.
The problem extends beyond travel. European financial regulators have warned that AI-powered fraud is growing across industries. In Germany, 62% of businesses report higher losses from AI-driven scams, with 63% expecting the trend to worsen by 2026. Phishing attacks have surged by 900% since the introduction of AI tools like ChatGPT.
Travellers are particularly at risk, especially when using mobile devices. Scammers use smishing—fraudulent SMS messages—and quishing—malicious QR codes—to exploit people's lowered guard while on the move. Industry groups, including the German Travel Association (DRV), are now strengthening defences against these threats.
To avoid falling victim, experts advise caution with unusually cheap travel deals. Users should avoid clicking suspicious links, use secure payment methods, and verify unexpected calls directly with the company.
