Alpine regions plan to intensify measures against unprecedented levels of tourism
In the picturesque Alpine region of Glarnerland, a controversial proposal has been put forward to address the growing issue of mass tourism. The Cantonal Council of Glarus, spearheading the initiative, suggests the introduction of a 'visitor contribution' that could potentially range up to 40 Swiss francs per car.
The proponent of this proposal is Roger Rhyner, a former radio presenter and advertising face of Visit Glarnerland. Rhyner believes that part of the revenue generated from this visitor fee should be returned to local pubs and restaurants to boost the local economy.
However, the implementation of this fee faces a legal challenge due to the Federal Constitution's guarantee of free access to public roads. Despite this hurdle, Rhyner remains optimistic, particularly about the Glarner Landsgemeinde's approval of the measure. Known for its surprising decisions, the Glarner Landsgemeinde is a traditional assembly of citizens that holds legislative power in the canton of Glarus.
If approved, payment for the visitor contribution would be made directly at a barrier. The proposed fee would be flexible, depending on factors such as the season, day of the week, or weather. This flexibility aims to ensure that the fee remains manageable for visitors while still generating sufficient revenue to manage tourism effectively.
However, the potential impact on local residents and tourists is a cause for concern. If implemented, a Sunday at the lake could become an expensive luxury excursion that not everyone can afford. Rhyner and the Cantonal Council of Glarus acknowledge this concern and are working to ensure that the fee is fair and equitable for all.
As the proposal moves forward, discussions continue regarding the feasibility, legality, and impact of the visitor contribution. Only time will tell if this controversial measure will become a reality in Glarnerland.
