"An Exquisite Natural Journey at 'Visiotopia'"
The Grüner Zoo Wuppertal has unveiled a new attraction, Visiotopia, on July 16, 2025. Located in the former birdhouse building, which was closed earlier this year due to not meeting animal husbandry standards, Visiotopia is a transformative project that aims to educate and inspire visitors about global species and nature conservation efforts[1].
This innovative attraction is the result of a collaboration between the Zoo-Verein Wuppertal e.V. and Visiodrom Wuppertal GmbH. It offers an immersive 360-degree multimedia experience, transporting visitors on an emotional audiovisual journey across various threatened habitats around the world[1][2].
From penguins on the Falkland Islands to elephants roaming the East African savannah, and the biodiversity-rich rainforests of South America and Southeast Asia, Visiotopia provides a virtual tour of some of the world's most endangered ecosystems. The presentation also sheds light on local species like the fire salamander native to the Bergisches Land and red pandas from the Himalayas[1][2].
Visitors to Visiotopia can expect to be fully immersed in the habitats as 16 high-performance projectors project animal and nature footage onto four walls and the floor[2]. After the Visiotopia experience, visitors will find themselves in the adjacent tropical hall, where they can observe real animals and plants in an authentic tropical climate[3].
The creation of Visiotopia was made possible with an investment of 195,000 euros by the Zoo Association Wuppertal, and Visiodrom GmbH contributed an additional 40,000 euros[4]. The project was implemented swiftly, with Visiotopia being realized less than four months after the financing decision[5].
High-quality material from funded nature conservation projects and exclusive, previously unpublished footage from renowned nature filmmakers were used in the film production for Visiotopia[6]. Regional expertise was also utilised to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of the presented content[7].
In addition to Visiotopia, the Green Zoo Wuppertal and Visiodrom will soon offer a joint combination ticket that includes a ride on the suspension railway[8]. This collaboration aims to provide visitors with an engaging and educational experience that promotes a deeper understanding and support for nature and species protection.
With Visiotopia, the Grüner Zoo Wuppertal and the Zoo Association Wuppertal have created a multimedia experience that uniquely combines cutting-edge immersive technology with educational storytelling, aiming to engage visitors emotionally and raise awareness about global and local conservation challenges[9]. The Nature Conservation Euro, a voluntary one-euro donation per ticket, has been flowing directly into six selected nature conservation projects since May 2024[10].
