The structures, which somewhat resemble pyramids due to their trapezoidal shape and extraordinary dimensions, have been attributed to the Neolithic Funnelbeaker Culture, a society known for its monumental burial architecture [1][2]. The tombs were confirmed by the Greater Poland Voivodeship Park Complex.
The researchers used advanced technologies, including aerial laser scanning and targeted field excavations, to identify these tombs. Some of these tombs reach up to 200 meters in length [1]. Each tomb contained only one skeleton, likely an important leader in society, such as religious, social, political, or administrative personalities [1].
The bodies were placed in a vertical position within the tombs, and no skeletons have been discovered in the excavated structures yet. However, surrounding the skeletons, researchers found precious objects such as weapons, ceramics, ornaments, and funeral offerings [1]. These artifacts could help researchers better understand the spiritual and daily life of the Funnelbeaker people.
Archaeologists hope to find more funeral artifacts still buried.
