Author Acquires Rare Scottish Tall Case Clock and Refurbishes a Collection of Antique Timepieces
In a recent acquisition, the author has added a unique piece to their antique and vintage clock collection: a Scottish tall case clock, assembled by William McLachlan of Newton, Steward in 1848. This impressive timepiece, with its stately mahogany case, was fully restored and is now a conversation piece in the author's home.
The tall case clock features a Solar design, boasting a Hermle type 141 movement, and strikes the half-hour on a bell. The clock was designed to echo through a stately Scottish manor, and its English bell strike movement adds to its grandeur.
In 2020, the author expanded their collection with another find: a Solar time and strike mantel clock, made in Germany and sold by Eatons Department store in Canada during the 1960s and 70s. This acquisition was accompanied by a Fleet Westminster chime mantel clock from the late 1930s, made by the Fleet Time Company of Montreal.
The author also added an Arthur Pequegnat Canuck time and strike gingerbread or kitchen clock to their collection. Purchased for $50 on an online for-sale site, the clock required significant TLC to bring it back to life. The author spent a considerable amount of time refurbishing the clock, including refreshing the case, inpainting the dial, and refurbishing the movement.
Another notable addition to the collection is a Sessions 3W electric clock, which features a Synchron motor and only requires a plug replacement. The condition and age of this clock are marveled at by those who have seen it. The dial of the clock is hand-painted, adding a touch of elegance to the piece.
The author also acquired a Junghans bracket clock for $40, which was non-working and needed significant TLC. After servicing the movement, refreshing the case, polishing the brass, adding new feet, the clock now occupies a prominent location in the author's family room.
Each of these timepieces adds a unique charm to the author's collection, offering a glimpse into the history of clock-making and serving as a testament to the author's passion for restoration and preservation.
The author's antique and vintage clock collection now includes a rare Scottish tall case clock, which showcases their dedication to building a comprehensive collection of wall clocks. The author's home-and-garden lifestyle, with its appreciation for vintage items, extends to their clock collection, including a Solar time and strike mantel clock sourced from the fashion-and-beauty mecca, Eatons Department store.
To broaden their collection even further, the author ventured into the realm of travel, acquiring a Canuck time and strike gingerbread clock, while a need for shopping led them to find the Sessions 3W electric clock on an online for-sale site. The Junghans bracket clock, a find from local shopping, serves as another testament to the author's dedication to building and refurbishing their clock collection.
In addition to their impressive clock collection, the author's foray into restoration also extends to their lifestyle, as seen in their refurbishing of a Scottish tall case clock and a Fleet Westminster chime mantel clock. Their commitment to maintaining and preserving antique items is an aspirational element for those with a passion for vintage clocks and clock collection.
Moreover, the author's collection is not only a compilation of valuable and historic timepieces but also a reflection of their appreciation for diverse styles and designs, encompassing fashion-and-beauty, food-and-drink, and travel. Their collection, serving as a conversation piece and a testament to their lifestyle, provides a captivating glimpse into the world of vintage clocks.
