Art in Recovery: Manchester Gallery's Groundbreaking Residency
A pioneering project in Greater Manchester is delving into the role of arts in recovery from substance use. Manchester's Castlefield Gallery has teamed up with Anew, a residential therapeutic community, to host this innovative residency. Spearheaded by Portraits of Recovery, a UK contemporary arts organization, this is thought to be the first artist residency of its kind in a treatment and recovery center.
The project, which will culminate in an exhibition at Castlefield Gallery until 19 October, aims to foster community, connection, and a renewed sense of purpose for people in recovery. Designer Joe Hartley collaborated with around 60 people at Anew, working across various disciplines to create artworks that will be displayed at the gallery.
The project seeks to drive social change through arts and culture, increasing visibility for marginalized people in recovery. It is hoped that this initiative will cultivate a sense of belonging and inspire others in similar situations.
The exhibition at Castlefield Gallery serves as a testament to the power of art in recovery and community building. This project marks a significant stride in the UK's arts and culture scene, paving the way for more initiatives that celebrate and support marginalized communities.
