Astana's Nauryz celebrations blend tradition with modern fashion and tech
Astana is gearing up for a vibrant celebration of Nauryz with a series of cultural events. From fashion shows to interactive workshops, the city will highlight traditional Kazakh attire through modern and creative lenses. Residents and visitors alike can take part in contests, exhibitions, and performances starting this March.
The festivities kick off on March 18 with National Costume Day, encouraging locals to embrace traditional wear. The 'One Day in National Costume' challenge will prompt Astana residents to share photos of themselves in ethnic attire across social media.
Later, the **Kulyash Baiseitova Kazakh National University of Arts** will host **Nauryz Show Fashion** at **2:00 PM**, blending classic Kazakh designs with contemporary trends. Visitors can also contribute to a collaborative artwork, *'Portrait of Nauryz'*, during the event. Meanwhile, students from the **Scenography and Fashion Design Department** will present their **Ethno Show by KAZNUA**, featuring modern ethno-style collections. For those interested in hands-on experiences, the **Active Longevity Center** will run a workshop on crafting national costumes, culminating in a mini-fashion show. Over at **Turandot restaurant**, robots dressed in traditional Kazakh outfits will greet guests, showcasing a mix of heritage and innovation. Shopping centres will join the celebrations too. **Khan Shatyr** and **MEGA Silk Way** will host runway shows by Kazakh designers, paired with live performances and theatrical acts. **DamuMall** will display an exhibition of traditional clothing, accompanied by a concert from the **dombra ensemble Shabyt**. The highlight of the celebrations is the **republican contest 'Altyn Ul'**, scheduled for **1:00 PM**. Grandmothers from all **17 regions of Kazakhstan**, including Astana, Almaty, and Shymkent, will present traditional costumes and share family customs. As of **March 2026**, over **5,000 participants** have registered for the competition.
