Athens Tops the List for the Ultimate Car-Free Getaway in Europe

Athens has been crowned the top city for a car-free break, scoring a perfect 99.75 out of 100. The Greek capital offers affordable and diverse public transport, including a tram to the coast and a metro to the airport. It also boasts a pedestrian belt around the Acropolis and easily walkable neighborhoods.

Munich, Germany, follows closely, ranking second with a score of 97.7. The city provides easy train access from the airport to the city center and is highly walkable. Sofia, Bulgaria, ranked fourth with a score of 88.16, offering affordable public transport and walkable areas. Hamburg, Germany, also made the top five, scoring 87.12. It offers extensive pedestrian zones and various transport options. Interestingly, both Vienna, Austria, and Porto, Portugal, tied with Hamburg for the fifth spot, each scoring 87.12.

These rankings highlight the growing focus on pedestrian-friendliness and public transportation in European cities. Athens leads the way, offering an ideal destination for those seeking a car-free holiday. Munich, Sofia, Hamburg, Vienna, and Porto also provide excellent options for exploring without a car.
