Bắc Ninh’s organic fruit boom lures tourists and boosts local economy

Bắc Ninh Province is blending agriculture with tourism, drawing visitors to its thriving fruit orchards and cultural heritage. The region, known for its pomelos and oranges, is now promoting sustainable farming and experiential travel. A recent festival and growing organic practices are helping boost local fruit brands and visitor numbers.

The province’s fruit industry is expanding rapidly. Officials plan to cultivate over 53,700 hectares of fruit trees, including 8,602 hectares for citrus alone. This year’s harvest is expected to reach 80,000 tonnes, worth more than VNĐ1.8 trillion (US$68.4 million).

One standout is the Nguyễn family’s 1.5-hectare organic pomelo orchard in Chử Ward. Certified under Vietnamese organic standards since 2020, it avoids synthetic chemicals entirely. This year, the family anticipates a 50-tonne yield, with prices ranging from VNĐ35,000 to VNĐ40,000 per kilogram. Nearby, Trần Văn Hồng’s 2-hectare orange orchard in Phương Sơn Ward is also thriving. His trees should produce over 30 tonnes this season, adding to the region’s bounty. To showcase these efforts, the Bắc Ninh Fruit Festival ran from December 5-10. The event highlighted local produce and growing areas, aiming to strengthen agricultural branding. Tourism is part of the strategy too, with goals to attract seven million visitors by 2027 and 10 million by 2030. Experiences like farm visits and craft village tours are being developed to draw crowds. During peak season, the hillsides turn golden with ripe fruit. The combination of organic farming, festivals, and tourism is putting Bắc Ninh on the map as a destination for both agriculture and culture.

The province’s focus on organic farming and tourism is increasing fruit production and visitor interest. With festivals promoting local fruit brands and orchards yielding high-quality crops, Bắc Ninh is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable agricultural tourism. Officials expect these efforts to drive economic growth and regional recognition in the coming years.
