Hagel to Write Food Security into Constitution - Baden-Württemberg eyes constitutional change to boost local food security

Manuel Hagel, the CDU’s lead candidate in Baden-Württemberg, wants to bolster local food production. He has proposed an amendment to the state’s constitution to enhance food security. Many key products currently depend too heavily on imports, with self-sufficiency rates often under 50 percent.

Hagel emphasized the region’s low self-sufficiency in essential foods. Staples like potatoes, vegetables, fruit, beef, pork, eggs, and milk frequently fall short of 50 percent local production. His plan seeks to decrease dependence on outside sources by making food security a constitutional objective.

The proposal addresses a persistent challenge in Baden-Württemberg’s food supply. If approved, the amendment would officially acknowledge food security as a state responsibility, potentially leading to more support for regional agriculture and a more stable local food system.
