Bangkok Braces for Heavy Rain, Flooding Next Week
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has issued a warning about impending heavy rain bands expected to hit the city next week. This could lead to significant flooding along the Chao Phraya River on October 9 and 10. Several communities are at risk, including those near Wat Thewarat Kunchorn and rice mill areas. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) is preparing emergency measures in six nearby provinces.
Water levels are predicted to rise to around 1.70-1.90 meters above mean sea level, just 0.20 meters shy of critical flood levels. This is due to a weakening southwest monsoon and high tides. The Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) has already warned of rising water levels along the Chao Phraya, Tha Chin, and Mae Klong rivers from October 3 to 6. Authorities are urged to closely monitor water levels, strengthen flood defenses, and prepare disaster response measures. Bangkok authorities have prepared over 200,000 sandbags for deployment to vulnerable points. Residents are advised to take extra precautions during this period.
Easterly and south-easterly winds are bringing rainfall to parts of Thailand, further raising river levels and posing a flooding risk in low-lying areas along the affected rivers.
The Bangkok Governor's warning highlights the imminent flooding risk due to heavy rain bands expected next week. Several communities are at risk, and authorities are preparing emergency measures. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
