Bavaria's Summer Holidays: Customs Warns Against Pitfalls

Bavaria's summer holidays are kicking off, and customs is gearing up to help travelers navigate regulations. Press spokesperson Elvira Enders-Beetschen from Hauptzollamt Landshut warns against common pitfalls, including souvenirs made from endangered species and duty-free limits on certain goods.

Even everyday items like instant food powders can contain protected plant parts, so it's crucial to check before packing. When entering from non-EU countries or special areas, duty-free limits apply for tobacco, alcohol, medicines, fuel, and other goods. Travel within the EU also has restrictions on luxury items like alcohol and tobacco.

The customs office website (www.zoll.de) and the online brochure 'Travel Time - Your Way Through Customs' explain these rules in detail. It's important to note that duty-free allowances only apply if goods are brought in by the traveler themselves using the same means of transport. Ignorance of the law is no excuse for violating customs regulations, which can result in seized goods, high fines, or penalties.

To avoid surprises and potential issues, customs advises travelers to familiarize themselves with the rules before setting off. This includes being aware of what can and can't be brought back as souvenirs, especially items made from animals or plants that could be endangered. By staying informed, travelers can ensure a smooth and worry-free holiday.
