50,000 Tulips on Breitscheidplatz for Self-Picking - Berlin's Tulip Day Returns With 50,000 Blooms and Free Flowers for All
A vibrant pop-up garden will soon brighten Berlin as Tulip Day returns to the city. The event, organised by the Dutch Embassy and Tulip Promotion Netherlands, will display 50,000 blooming tulips. Visitors can even take home a small bunch of their own—up to ten flowers each.
Tulips first grew in Turkey, but the Netherlands now leads the world in their production. Germany also plays a major role in tulip farming, with two states standing out. In Saxony-Anhalt and North Rhine-Westphalia, farmers grow around 150 million bulbs each year for commercial use. North Rhine-Westphalia produces the bulk, with roughly 120 million, while Saxony-Anhalt contributes about 30 million (based on 2023/2024 figures from the Central Horticulture Association).
This year's Tulip Day Berlin centres on the theme *United in Bloom*. The event explores how tulips bring people together and lift spirits. Guests will wander through a temporary garden filled with colourful blooms. Alongside the visual spectacle, they can pick a selection of flowers to enjoy at home.
The free event offers a chance to experience Dutch floral culture firsthand. With thousands of tulips on display, it also highlights the flower's journey from Turkish origins to global popularity. Organisers hope the celebration will leave visitors with a small piece of spring to take away.
