Alpine Traditions: Where Man and Myth Blend - Bernd Römmelt’s Haunting Lens Captures Vanishing Alpine Rituals

Photographer and ethnologist Bernd Römmelt has indeed spent over 25 years documenting ancient Alpine traditions. His work offers a unique glimpse into a world where faith, community, and lived ritual intertwine. Römmelt's photography takes him primarily to the Alps and the far north, where he spends more time in nature and the mountains than in his hometown of Munich.

Römmelt's photo collection showcases a wide range of figures and rituals. Well-known characters like the Krampus and Perchten feature prominently, alongside rarely seen traditions such as the Bear-Driving and the Wild Hunt. These celebrations, known as Raunächte, take place from December until winter's end. Each mask and costume embodies ancient and terrifying elements, symbolising the triumph over darkness and the rebirth of life for rural communities.

Over the years, Römmelt has documented around 35 Alpine traditions across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and Slovenia. His work has earned him multiple accolades, including recognition in the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

Römmelt's dedication to preserving these ancient traditions is evident in his extensive collection. His photographs not only capture the spectacle of the masked figures but also the deeper meaning behind these rituals. By sharing his work, Römmelt helps to keep these traditions indeed alive and accessible to a wider audience.
