Bethlehem’s Christmas Magic Returns With Markets, History and a Giant PEEPS Drop
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, affectionately known as 'Christmas City USA', is set to transform into a winter wonderland once again this December. With a history of Christmas traditions dating back to its founding in 1741, the city promises a festive experience like no other.
Kicking off the celebrations is the Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem, a German-inspired market featuring over 150 artisan vendors. Here, visitors can find authentic German ornaments and seasonal treats, setting the perfect festive mood. The Moravian Book Shop, established in 1745, also becomes a cozy holiday hub filled with books, ornaments, and Moravian crafts.
Bethlehem's connection to Christmas runs deep. It was home to the first documented decorated Christmas tree in America in 1747. The 'Star of Bethlehem' was erected in 1937 to further brand the city as the ultimate holiday destination. The Live Advent Calendar offers surprises, treats, or performances each night from Dec. 1-23, adding to the city's enchanting atmosphere.
For New Year's Eve, PEEPSFEST & Giant PEEPS Drop promises a unique celebration. A 400-pound giant Peeps Chick is dropped at midnight, marking the start of a 'news' year. Christmas City Village, a charming market in the Historic Moravian District, offers local crafts, holiday foods, and unique gifts. Horse-drawn carriage rides provide a magical old-world experience past historic buildings.
Bethlehem's festive spirit is easily accessible. The Interstate 78 (I-78) and Amtrak's Northeast Corridor provide convenient transportation from New York City. With its rich history, diverse offerings, and unmatched festive atmosphere, Bethlehem is truly a must-visit this holiday season.
