Flavonoids: A recipe for longevity?
A recent study authored by Bondonno showed that consuming high amounts of flavonoid-rich foods can lower the risk of frailty and poor mental health. The research team analyzed data from over 85,000 participants ages 60 and above from the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study. By the conclusion of the study, they found that women with the highest flavonoid intake had a 15% lower risk of frailty and a 12% lower risk of impaired mental health.
"These findings suggest that diets rich in flavonoid-containing foods may help older women maintain strength and mobility as they age - key factors in staying independent, avoiding falls, and preserving overall quality of life," Bondonno explains. "Even modest improvements like these can make a real difference in someone's ability to live well into older age."
Yet, the benefits of flavonoids seem to differ between genders. Although male participants experienced a 15% decrease in their risk of poor mental health, there was no reduction in their risk of lower frailty or impaired physical function.
"It's possible that the discrepancy we observed between the males and females has more to do with how the study was structured than a true biological difference," Bondonno remarks. "More research is needed to understand whether men and women truly respond differently to flavonoids."
