Busan’s Beloved Santa Bus Tradition Ends After 20 Years Over Fire Risks

Busan has cancelled its beloved 'Santa Bus' service after nearly 20 years. The decision follows safety concerns over fire risks from onboard decorations. Residents who had looked forward to the festive tradition have expressed disappointment at its sudden end.

The Santa Bus first launched in 2006 as an idea from a now-retired driver named Kim I-sun. What began as a single decorated vehicle grew into a seasonal tradition, with four or five buses operating each December. Volunteer drivers dressed as Santa Claus, and the buses were filled with Christmas lights and ornaments, attracting riders eager to secure a seat.

Over time, the concept spread to other cities, becoming a well-known festive feature. However, this year’s suspension came after officials received a complaint about sparks from the decorations. Tests confirmed that the materials posed a fire hazard, leading to the removal of all interior and exterior festive elements.

The cancellation marks the end of a long-standing holiday custom in Busan. City officials have stated that the decision was unavoidable due to safety regulations. The decorated buses, which once drew crowds of eager passengers, will no longer run this December.
