Busy motorway service stations best steered clear during vacation periods, warns ADAC
During the vacation season, motorists may encounter substantial price disparities when refueling on the Autobahn compared to off-highway gas stations, according to a recent study by ADAC.
The study revealed that Super E10 at 50 gas station pairs is, on average, priced 44 cents per liter higher on the Autobahn compared to off-highway stations. Diesel prices also show a similar trend, with an average difference of 42 cents per liter.
These price differences can vary depending on location and time, but it is not uncommon to find gaps of several cents per liter or more between Autobahn stations and off-highway pumps. For instance, the study found a peak difference of over 57 cents between some stations.
The ADAC advises drivers to be mindful of this pricing pattern during the holiday season to avoid the premium charges on Autobahn stations and potentially reduce travel costs. By driving off the highway, a 50-liter fuel fill-up can save around or more than 20 euros.
The ADAC's findings suggest an unfair pricing practice among some Autobahn gas stations, which may have a cartel-like effect. The Federal Cartel Office is currently investigating this potential issue.
In previous years, the price differences between Autobahn and off-highway gas stations have increased. At 90% of E10 stations and 88% of diesel stations, there were differences of at least 30 cents.
The ADAC's criticism of Autobahn gas station prices reflects a continuation of their stance on the issue. They argue that price differences of this magnitude are not acceptable and may be considered excessive by consumers.
In addition to advising drivers to avoid Autobahn gas stations, the ADAC offers other fuel-saving tips. For example, filling up the night before you leave can help save money, as fuel is usually cheaper then than in the morning.
When driving abroad, it's often cheaper to fill up after crossing the border, but this is not always the case. It's essential for travelers to research fuel prices in their destination before setting off on their journey.
The ADAC study is based on a sample of 50 gas station pairs, but the organisation encourages drivers to be vigilant throughout the summer travel season, especially at the beginning, when Autobahn prices tend to increase.
The Commission, in light of the reported unfair pricing practices among some Autobahn gas stations, might consider a proposal to align lifestyle choices with economical fuel options, such as avoiding Autobahn stations during travel. By doing so, workers exposed to ionizing radiation, a group protected by the directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States, could potentially save on travel costs, alleviating some risks associated with their profession.
Furthermore, travelers could adopt a proactive approach when refueling abroad by researching fuel prices in their destination, just as they would investigate the local culture and traditions of their chosen vacation spot. This practice could help minimize unnecessary expenses, enhancing the overall affordability of their travel lifestyle.
