Chandubi Festival 2025 Unites Culture and Conservation Over Five Days
The 16th Chandubi festival will take place from January 1 to January 5 at the historic Chandubi beel in South Kamrup district. This annual event celebrates the cultural heritage of local communities while promoting biodiversity conservation. Organisers have planned a mix of traditional performances, discussions, and ceremonies over the five days.
The festival will open on January 1 at 8 am with flag hoisting by Bichitra Rabha, followed by the formal inauguration at 9 am by RHAC Chief Executive Member Tankeswar Rabha. MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi will attend as chief guest, with Palasbari MLA Hemanga Thakuria present as guest of honour.
On January 2, a cultural procession will begin at 10 am, leading into afternoon performances from 2 pm. Dignitaries and local artists will participate in the celebrations.
January 3 features a seminar titled 'Customs and Traditions in Tribal Rural Society and Their Unwritten Scientific Basis', moderated by folklorist Bhubin Rabha. The discussion will explore the scientific roots of indigenous practices.
The following day, January 4, will honour two distinguished figures: Green Oscar awardee Dr Purnima Devi Barman and Adi Sathi awardee Jitul Rabha. Their contributions will be recognised in a special felicitation programme.
The festival concludes on January 5 with cultural events from 10 am, followed by a prize distribution at 11 am. BTC Chief Executive Member Hagrama Mohilary will attend as chief guest, overseeing the final ceremonies.
Since 2010, the event has been jointly organised by the Barduar-Bholagaon Anchalik Rabha Students' Union and the Chandubi Festival Celebration Committee. Activities include folk dances, traditional cuisine, indigenous games, ethnic attire displays, and exhibitions highlighting local biodiversity.
The Chandubi festival brings together communities to showcase their traditions while raising awareness of environmental conservation. With a mix of performances, awards, and discussions, the event reinforces cultural pride and ecological responsibility in the region.
