China suspends tariffs on Canadian imports in trade thaw move
China has announced a temporary suspension of tariffs on certain Canadian imports. The decision, made by the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), covers a period from March 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026. It follows Canada's recent easing of restrictions on Chinese steel and aluminium products.
The move stems from an anti-discrimination investigation launched by MOFCOM on September 26, 2024. After reviewing the case, the ministry imposed additional tariffs on Canadian goods in a ruling issued on March 8, 2025.
Now, China has adjusted its stance by temporarily lifting these tariffs for nearly 10 months. While the exact number of affected product categories remains undisclosed, the suspension aligns with China's broader aim. Authorities have stated their willingness to collaborate with Canada on fostering stable and sustainable trade relations.
The tariff suspension will remain in effect until the end of 2026. This decision reflects a reciprocal response to Canada's recent policy changes on Chinese metals. Both nations appear to be working toward reducing trade barriers between them.
