Coburg honors the sausage with traffic light men - Coburg’s New Traffic Light Celebrates Its Iconic Bratwurst in Style
Coburg has unveiled a unique traffic light figure to celebrate its famous bratwurst. The new pedestrian signal shows a person holding the town’s signature long sausage in a roll. Mayor Dominik Sauerteig officially introduced the design at a crossing near the market square.
The bratwurst-themed figure, named the 'Franconian Deluxe,' stands at the pedestrian crossing from Schlossplatz to Herrngasse. It replaces the standard green man, making Coburg the only town with a meaty traffic light mascot. The design highlights the local specialty: a 25 to 30-centimetre pork sausage, coarsely ground and grilled over pine wood.
The mayor announced that all signals around the market square will soon feature the bratwurst-holding figure. This move follows a citizens' initiative to protect Coburg’s grilling traditions after an EU ban on pine cone fires. The sausage itself is a point of pride, even attracting notable visitors like King Charles, who once sampled it.
The new traffic light reinforces the bratwurst’s role as a symbol of Coburg’s identity. Residents now see their beloved sausage every time they cross the street. The figure also puts the town on the map as the only place with a culinary-themed pedestrian signal.
