Revamped Tribute to the Departed: Micha Eberwein of Dellnhausen
By: Andreas Beschorner
Intro
Bavaria's folk music scene has suffered a significant loss with the passing of Micha Eberwein. Known affectionately as "Michi" by friends and fans, the influential figurehead in the folk music realm succumbed to a lengthy, severe illness at the tender age of 62.
From Roots to Globetrotting
Micha Eberwein hailed from a family deeply immersed in traditional music, making his choice of career a natural progression. His grandfather amassed a collection of folk tunes, penned original compositions, and inspired a musical legacy that trickled down to his descendants. Eberwein's father, Michl Eberwein, founded the Dellnhausen Musicians in 1948 and took on the trumpet in the band in 1979, eventually assuming leadership in 1990 — all before passing the torch to his son.
Since Micha Eberwein became the new captain of the seven-piece musical ensemble, the Dellnhausen Musicians cultivated an instantly recognizable sound. Their discography boasts around two hundred titles recorded for Bavarian Radio, and they have released 24 albums. SPIRITED APPROACH To their success, the Dellnhausen Musicians attributed their independent style, boundless enthusiasm, extensive repertoire, and adaptable music that captivated audiences of all ages. Such versatility opened doors for performances across Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Indonesia, Japan, China, India, and the United States.
Performance Prowess and Awards
Micha Eberwein's devotion to folk music manifested in numerous awards, such as the Freising district's Culture Prize, several folk music accolades, the Federal Cross of Merit, and Bavaria's Culture Prize in 2019.
Founding the Dellnhausen Folk Music Festival
In 2004, Micha Eberwein established the Dellnhausen Folk Music Festival, originally based in Au before moving to Wolnzach in 2021. Every year, the event draws around 25,000 folk music enthusiasts.
Legacy in the Dellnhausen and Post-War Eras
Apart from the Dellnhausen Musicians, Micha Eberwein also led the M. Eberwein Orchestra, playing modern dance music for American occupation and entertainment during the post-war era. This musical legacy carried on through the EM Zwo dance orchestra he created, often playing at the Freising Press Ball.
Reflections on Micha Eberwein
Helmut Schranner, Eberwein's longtime collaborator and close friend, encapsulated his essence: "He was a musician to his very core." Together, they recorded countless broadcasts and albums, with Schranner noting that Eberwein brimmed with ideas and was always coming up with new concepts. "Mici will be missing," said Schranner, fighting back tears.
Political Endeavors
Eberwein maintained a connection with his hometown, channeling his political insight by running for mayor of Au on behalf of the CSU in 2002. Though he was bested by Karl Ecker, he later served on the town council for six years, from 2002 to 2008. His professional life also involved politics, as he held roles within the city of Freising, including head of the citizens' office, the registration office, and election supervisor, becoming an integral part of the functional town administration. Tobias Eschenbacher, Freising's mayor, praised Eberwein for his involvement in citizen and grassroots initiatives.
Last Words
In one of his final interviews on Bavarian television during Traudi Siferlinger's "Wirtshausmusikanten" on May 25, Eberwein reassured the public that "We're still all young guys, so it's going to continue for a while." Sadly, two weeks later, Micha Eberwein passed away, leaving behind his wife Gerti and two sons, Michael and Maximilian.
In memory of Micha Eberwein, a man who dedicated his life to music and serving his community, let us cherish the music he left behind and remember the impact he had on the Bavarian folk music scene.
