Why a trip to the Danish capital is worth it even in winter - Copenhagen’s Christmas Markets Shine with Hygge and Holiday Magic

Copenhagen, the Danish capital, transforms into a winter wonderland during Advent. The city's former harbor district, now a hub for dining and entertainment, hosts enchanting Christmas markets along the waterfront. Meanwhile, Hans Christian Andersen, the famed author of fairy tales like The Little Mermaid, remains immortalized in the city's statues and museums but did not participate in the 2022 markets.

The Kongens Marked, one of the city's main Christmas markets, sparkles with countless lights and festive stalls. Here, visitors can indulge in English toffees, woolen sweaters, jewelry, and gløgg, a traditional Danish mulled wine with almond slivers and raisins. For a change of pace, the urban park Superkilen in Nørrebro offers swings, a boxing ring, fountains, and hills, best explored in the summer.

Copenhagen radiates hygge, a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, during Advent. Decorated trees, houses, windows, and squares adorn the city. The vibrant neighborhood of Vesterbro, west of Copenhagen Central Station, is home to cafés, shops, and bars like Bar 1656, renowned for its inventive cocktails. The city's public transport system, including a reliable metro and bus network, is easily navigated with the Rejseplanen app. Nørrebro, one of Copenhagen's trendiest neighborhoods, is ranked among the 40 coolest in the world by Time Out magazine. It features small shops, vintage and secondhand stores, multicultural eateries, and famous pastries at Café Kaf. The Copenhagen Card offers unlimited public transport and entry to many museums for a fixed fee, available for purchase via the app.

Copenhagen's Christmas markets, like the Kongens Marked, provide a delightful experience with their festive stalls and traditional treats. While Hans Christian Andersen did not attend the 2022 markets, his legacy lives on in the city's statues and museums. The city's vibrant neighborhoods, efficient public transport, and the Copenhagen Card make it an ideal destination during Advent.
