Discovering Thessaloniki Through Local Guides

Thessaloniki, Greece, may seem dull at first glance, but a closer look reveals a rich history and a colorful culture that is truly captivating.

On a drizzly day, the Louloudadika Flower Market was a riot of color, with vendors selling an array of blooms. The city's long history as a cultural melting pot, influenced by the Ottoman empire, Jewish immigrants, and Pontic Greeks, is evident in every corner.

One such corner is Modiano Market, an iconic delicatessen market with a rich history. Here, you can find a variety of Pontic Greek delicacies, including the popular cheese dumplings served at Ragian on Balanou Street, accompanied by sweet chilli sauce.

As the sun sets, Thessaloniki comes alive with its lively nightlife. Popular destinations include Sonik Arena, celebrated for its modern electronic music experience and vibrant atmosphere, and Giapi Club, noted for diverse events and music launches. Principal Club, Block 33, J'adore Supreme Club, and Eden Club are also well-known for their live music, welcoming ambiance, and epic parties.

Eightball Club, with its two dance floors and live music on weekends, and the more alternative WonderWall Cafe Bar, featuring karaoke nights, beer pong, and retro gaming, cater to a wide range of tastes. For those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere, Arabella Cruise Bar, Le Coq Tail Mix Bar, and The Hoppy Pub are great options.

Thessaloniki's nightlife is not just about music and dancing. The fabulous Dia Hiros Resiniotou on Kastritsiou street is known for making the best pies in Thessaloniki, while Ouzo shots are frequently served at Panellinion Bar.

For a food-centered tour of the city, Thessaloniki Walking Tours is the way to go. During the tour, you'll sample local delicacies like halva, an Ottoman-influenced sweet.

On the author's final night in Thessaloniki, a local PR manager, Evdokia, led a tour of the city centre's bars and nightlife. The night ended at Panellinion Bar, filled with applause and dancing, as a vivacious and fiery woman led a group of dancers in traditional dances.

The city also has a thriving arts scene. Bord de l'eau Design Factory is a design studio where cousins Yiannis Gounaridis and Yiannis Papaioannou introduce their latest works. Aravella's, an eclectic store filled with vintage clothes, unique accessories, and handmade homewares, is another must-visit for art lovers.

The Artistic Pedagogic Youth Organization, a local charity working with underprivileged kids at a tiny and colourful school, is a testament to the city's community spirit.

Lastly, it's worth noting that Thessaloniki is considered one of the best cities in the world for nightlife. Discover Greece and Aegean Airlines arranged the Blogtrotters Greece 2015 trip and hosted the author's stay in Thessaloniki, making it easier to explore this vibrant city.
