Kicking Parkinson's to the Curb: Eamon's Extraordinary Journey
Eamon Takes Action in Support of Parkinson's Condition
By Eamon Daly
I swapped the emerald isles of Ireland for sunny Australia over 30 years ago, settling down with my beautiful wife Michele and raising two brilliant kids. Now, I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my first grandchild, with another Junior Daly on the horizon.
I've always admired the Australian way of life and the opportunities it provides to explore an extraordinarily beautiful continent. But a Parkinson's diagnosis at the age of 62, 18 months ago, sent a shockwave through my system. I had to call an audible on our retirement plans.
Looking back, I'd been grappling with symptoms for a couple of years - a laggard right arm, a wonky footstep, tremors, and mousing difficulties. I chalked it up to aging and arthritis, retiring earlier than planned. The official diagnosis gave it all aclearer meaning.
My family has been a rock, providing unwavering support throughout this journey. My wife attends all specialist appointments with me, making sure we're on the same page and don't miss a beat. The diagnostic stage was a whirlwind, so having her by my side kept information overload at bay.
Finding Parkinson's NSW was a godsend, especially during those uncertain early days. It gave me access to vital information and online support for me and the family during those challenging times.
My life took a remarkable turn for the better when my specialist recommended the martial arts exercise program, Knock Out Parkinson's Disease (KOPD). Developed by an exercise physiologist, the program involves high-intensity interval training, hitting heavy bags, speed bags, and jump rope routines, all Focused on improving balance, coordination, and mood. Quite unexpectedly, I gained friends for life in this extraordinary peer group of fellow Parkinson's warriors.
My mindset changed almost overnight, along with my fitness levels, balance, and coordination. The camaraderie and genuine friendships forged during KOPD have been a game-changer for me.
Currently, I'm on a road trip adventure up the Murrumbidgee and Murray rivers, easing into retirement with my partner in crime by my side. I'm raising awareness and staying motivated with my exercise program thanks to Step Up for Parkinson's, dedicating each day in May to strength and balance exercises, no matter where I am.
"My Step Up for Parkinson's goal is to push myself every day in May, doing my strength and balance exercises in the great outdoors. Exercise like this is crucial for people like me battling Parkinson's in order to slow down the progression of this condition," I said.
You might say my retirement plans have taken an unexpected detour. But between my newfound fitness, our ongoing Australian adventures, and hopes of a 3-week tour of India later this year, I couldn't be more excited about the future.
Medications, of course, play a significant role in my treatment. But staying fit is the real game-changer, helping me lead a fulfilling and meaningful life with Parkinson's.

Enrichment Data: The Knock Out Parkinson's Disease (KOPD) exercise program is a vigorous boxing-based fitness initiative specifically designed for people living with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Based on the Rock Steady Boxing concept, it encourages non-contact boxing and utilizes exercises such as jump rope, footwork drills, hitting heavy bags and speed bags. These activities are aimed at improving hand-eye coordination, balance, agility, reaction time, core strength, and cognitive function (3).
KOPD offers several benefits to Parkinson's patients:
- Slows Disease Progression: Regular, high-intensity exercise has shown potential in slowing the progression of Parkinson's by stimulating neuroplasticity and enhancing motor function (3)(4).
- Improves Motor Symptoms: Boxing training helps alleviate symptoms like slowness of movement, rigidity, and imbalanced posture by engaging multiple muscle groups and boosting overall physical function (3).
- Boosts Balance and Coordination: The program emphasizes balance, agility, and hand-eye coordination, which are often compromised in PD patients (3).
- Enhances Cognitive Function: Exercises that require focus, reaction, and cognitive engagement can aid in mitigating cognitive decline associated with Parkinson's (3).
- Builds Mental Fortitude: In addition to serving as physical therapy, the empowering and supportive group environment reduces the isolation felt by many PD patients, boosting motivation and hope (1)(2)(5).
- Fosters a Sense of Empowerment: Boxing training not only offers physical benefits but also provides a sense of accomplishment and improved quality of life for those living with Parkinson's (5).
In essence, the KOPD program employs boxing exercises catered to the unique requirements of Parkinson's patients, delivering physical, cognitive, and emotional benefits that can enhance well-being and foster a supportive community atmosphere (1)(3)(4)(5).
