Electric vehicles win favor during driving, according to ADAC car insurance survey findings

The ADAC Car Insurance recently conducted a survey about opinions on electric cars, and the results are revealing some interesting trends. The survey, which was carried out by Norstat, involved 1,071 drivers aged 18 and over in July 2025 who are involved in the decision to take out car insurance.

The survey results indicate that test drives are crucial for the purchase of an electric vehicle. A staggering 86% of drivers would not buy an electric vehicle without a test drive, and 70% would like to make several test drives before deciding to buy one. For 78% of drivers, the desired test drive should include charging the vehicle.

Another significant finding is the importance drivers place on insurance protection for the battery of an electric vehicle. A whopping 72% of respondents consider this protection important, with the ADAC car insurance recommending buyers of electric vehicles to ensure that their insurance protection includes all-risk coverage for the battery.

The survey did not provide information about the interest in electric vehicles among different age groups, but it did reveal that most drivers (76%) see the larger selection of electric vehicles as the most important factor for the upward trend. This is supported by the fact that in the first half of 2025, 17.7% of all newly registered passenger cars in Germany were electric vehicles.

The boom in electric vehicles is also attributed to the higher ranges and shorter charging times due to further developed drive batteries, according to 61% of survey participants. In Europe, electric vehicles surpassed one million new registrations for the first time in 202x, marking a 25% increase compared to the previous year.

Interestingly, only 31% of those who currently do not drive an electric vehicle say they would stay with their current car brand when switching. About another third (35%) are undecided or do not make any statement about staying with their current car brand, while 34% of survey participants are inclined to switch car brands when switching to an electric vehicle.

The survey did not provide information about the reasons why some car owners avoid electric vehicles. However, it is worth noting that an exchange for the drive battery of an electric vehicle can cost up to 20,000 euros or more, which could be a deterrent for some potential buyers.

Overall, the ADAC car insurance survey suggests that insurance should include protection for the battery of electric vehicles, and that test drives are essential for potential buyers to make an informed decision. As the selection of electric vehicles continues to grow and their benefits become more apparent, it is likely that we will see even more drivers making the switch to electric in the coming years.
