Daily 150 Meals in the "Heart's Restaurant" - Erfurt's Charity Restaurant of the Heart Closes After Serving 5,700 Meals
A popular charity restaurant in Erfurt is preparing to close its doors after weeks of serving warm meals to those in need. The Restaurant of the Heart, run by the Protestant City Mission, has provided food and companionship throughout Advent and winter. Its final day will include a visit from a senior political figure.
The restaurant opened on St. Nicholas Day and has since served over 5,700 meals—around 150 portions daily. Guests receive hot food, coffee, and cake, with leftovers packed for them to take home. To eat at subsidised rates, visitors must show proof of financial need.
Beyond meals, the space fosters social bonds. Many guests use it as a chance to meet others and combat loneliness during the cold months. The project relies entirely on donations from local businesses and community groups.
On its last day, Bodo Ramelow, deputy president of the Bundestag, is set to attend. His visit highlights the initiative's impact on both the local community and wider society.
The Restaurant of the Heart will shut after weeks of supporting vulnerable residents. Its model—combining food aid with social interaction—has offered relief to hundreds. Organisers hope the project's success will inspire similar efforts in the future.
