Europe dispatches 36,000 young individuals for complimentary journeys across Europe

The European Commission has announced a new round of the DiscoverEU program, offering 36,000 free train tickets for European travel to young people. These tickets are valid from July 2023 to September 2024, allowing participants to explore Europe for a month without cost. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years old at the start of their journey and can hail from EU member states, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, North Macedonia, Serbia, or Turkey.

Applications opened in April, and according to the Brussels authority's announcement, Germany saw the highest number of applications, followed closely by Spain and Poland. A total of over 6,100 German youth will receive funding for their trips through the EU Commission. The DiscoverEU program has been in operation since 2018, and since its inception, a grand total of 391,000 young people have been granted these tickets. In addition to the train tickets, other benefits such as discounts for accommodation and cultural institutions are also available.

The DiscoverEU program is an initiative under Erasmus+, aiming to provide young Europeans with the opportunity to travel extensively across the continent primarily by rail. Participants are eligible to travel within the Schengen area and beyond.[1][5] However, for the most recent round, specific statistics on applications per country have not been disclosed in the available search results.
