From Ukraine to Alexandria: Photographer Lyza's Resilience and Art

Alexandria-based portrait photographer Yelyzaveta Pyvovarova, known as Lyza, has made a name for herself in Fairfax County with her captivating images. Fleeing Ukraine with her daughters in 2022, Lyza now runs her own portrait photography business and manages events for ALX Community in Old Town.

Lyza's journey began in 2019 when she started her professional career, specializing in headshots and family portraits. Her work in Alexandria primarily consists of headshots and event photography, but her favorite shots are candid moments of families with children and natural headshots. She prefers capturing genuine emotions and interactions over posed group photos.

Lyza's life took a significant turn in 2022 when she fled Ukraine with her two daughters due to the war with Russia. Despite the challenges, she has built a new life in Alexandria, launching her own business and connecting with the community through her work with ALX Community in Old Town. Every morning, she calls family and friends back home in Ukraine to stay connected.

Lyza's passion for photography shines through her work, capturing the essence of her subjects in natural and candid moments. Her story serves as a testament to resilience and adaptability, as she continues to build her life in Alexandria while staying connected to her roots in Ukraine. The future remains uncertain, but Lyza's dedication to her craft and community is unwavering.
