German-African Municipal Conference Boosts Cooperation and Knowledge Sharing

The 6th Partnership Conference between German and Sub-Saharan African municipalities concluded successfully in Giessen, with around 200 attendees from 18 African countries and Germany. The conference, held from September 8 to 11, 2025, fostered international cooperation and addressed challenges in municipal development.

The conference, themed around 'Knowledge is the only resource that grows when it's shared', brought together participants to discuss topics such as sustainable urban development, fair trade, digital mobility, urban planning, and refugee integration. Students from Giessen and Radisele, Botswana, also attended to learn about global themes and international cooperation.

Key challenges addressed included different framework conditions, bureaucratic hurdles, and limited resources. Despite these obstacles, the conference built trust and opened up new perspectives, with eye-level solutions found through dialogue and creativity. The city partnership between Giessen and Swakopmund was highlighted as an example of successful municipal cooperation across continents.

The conference, attended by Mayor Frank-Tilo Becher, emphasized the importance of municipal partnerships for a social, just, and sustainable world. It resulted in strengthened ties between German and African municipalities, paving the way for future collaborations and knowledge exchange.
