Germany Braces for Easter Travel Chaos on Major Highways

Easter weekend is set to bring Germany's first major travel rush of the year, with thousands heading to the North and Baltic Sea coasts. The surge in holidaymakers will put heavy pressure on key highways, leading to inevitable delays and congestion. The highways connecting the Hamburg area to coastal destinations are especially prone to gridlock. The A1, A7, A20, A23, and A24 motorways face the worst bottlenecks as families and tourists flood the roads. Most travellers will drive their own cars, sharply increasing traffic volumes.

Traffic peaks on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, when many begin their long weekend trips. The combination of school holidays and public holidays creates a concentrated wave of movement toward the coast. As a result, journey times stretch far beyond normal, with long queues forming on major routes. While no specific measures for these highways have been announced, police in Bavaria will enforce vehicle weight restrictions. The coastal regions, popular for Easter getaways, brace for the annual influx of visitors.

The Easter travel rush will test road networks, with the A1, A7, A20, A23, and A24 bearing the brunt of congestion. Drivers should expect delays, particularly on the busiest days of the holiday. Authorities have not outlined targeted solutions for these routes, leaving motorists to navigate the seasonal gridlock.
