Hanau's 2025 Digital Urban Transformation Inspired by Bochum's Success

Hanau, a city in Germany, is actively pursuing a digital urban transformation with a clear vision and a keen eye on successful strategies from beyond its borders. In 2025, Hanau plans to implement a digitized urban transformation, inspired by its own digital services and building permit processes, although the specific city or concept that inspired it remains unclear.

In pursuit of this goal, Hanau's delegation, led by City Councilor and Digital Commissioner Isabelle Hemsley, recently visited Bochum to learn about its digital strategy. The visit proved valuable for Hanau, as it provided an opportunity to reflect on their own approach to digital transformation. Bochum, which began its digital journey in 2017 with the 'Bochum Strategy', has been implementing projects in close cooperation with city utilities, universities, and other partners. This collaborative approach has resulted in solutions that directly benefit residents, a strategy Hanau aims to emulate.

Hanau, however, is not starting from scratch. In 2023, it established the Office for Digitalization and Organizational Development, a significant step in its digital strategy. Unlike some cities that view digitization as an isolated IT issue, Hanau is committed to strategically anchoring it as part of its urban transformation.

Hanau's digital urban transformation, set for 2025, is a testament to the city's determination and forward-thinking approach. While the specifics of its inspiration remain unclear, Hanau's visit to Bochum and its establishment of the Office for Digitalization and Organizational Development demonstrate a clear path towards a smarter, more connected future.
