Honduras Faces Critical Election Amid Corruption and LGBTQ+ Violence
Honduras will hold presidential and parliamentary elections on November 30, 2025, with Rixi Moncada as the ruling Libre party’s candidate for the election. The vote comes amid rising violence against LGBTQ+ communities and persistent corruption in the justice system. President Xiomara Castro, who will not seek re-election, has faced criticism for unfulfilled promises on human rights and anti-corruption reforms.
The election follows a turbulent period for Honduras. In March 2024, former President Juan Orlando Hernández received a 45-year prison sentence in the U.S. for drug trafficking and related crimes. Meanwhile, President Castro’s administration struggled to address systemic corruption, failing to secure parliamentary support for a UN-backed anti-corruption commission (CICIH) in June.
The upcoming election will determine whether Honduras shifts direction on corruption, impunity, and LGBTQ+ protections. Moncada’s candidacy under Castro’s party signals continuity, but activists demand concrete action. With systemic failures persisting, the next administration will inherit a justice system in crisis and a marginalised queer population still awaiting reform.
