"Honoring the legacy, yet raising awareness": Street renaming honors Fritz Neuland in Munich
In a significant move, the city of Munich has decided to rename two streets in the Lehel district, as an official honour for Fritz Neuland's contributions to Jewish life in the city.
From 1951 to 1969, Fritz Neuland served as the president of the Israelite Religious Community in Munich, playing a pivotal role in rebuilding Jewish life in the city after World War II. Neuland, a Munich lawyer who survived the Holocaust in hiding, returned to his profession in 1946 and specialized in reparation issues.
One of the streets to be renamed is Corneliusstraße, which will now be known as Fritz-Neuland-Straße. The location of the renamed street section is symbolic, as it is on the way from the Reichenbachstraße synagogue to the Ohel Jakob synagogue. The other street, St.-Jakobs-Platz, will also be renamed to Fritz-Neuland-Straße.
Fritz Neuland's daughter, Dr. Charlotte Knobloch, continues his legacy as the president of the Israelite Religious Community Munich. Knobloch, who is also an honorary citizen of Munich, has been instrumental in preserving Neuland's legacy and promoting Jewish life in the city.
The renaming is a result of the efforts of CSU city councilor Michael Dzeba and is a part of the city's efforts to preserve Neuland's visible memory. According to Green city councilor Gudrun Lux, the renaming is a reminder and encouragement, serving as a testament to Neuland's significant contributions to Jewish life in Munich.
Fritz Neuland rebuilt the Israelite Religious Community in Munich on July 15, 1945, and from 1951 to 1963, he was a member of the Bavarian Senate. In 1959, Neuland received the Bavarian Order of Merit for his services to the state.
The renaming of the streets is a fitting tribute to a man who laid the foundation for Jewish life in post-war Munich. Fritz Neuland passed away on November 4, 1969, but his legacy continues to live on in the city he dedicated his life to serving.
