How a Bold Superyacht Defied Thailand’s Tough Maritime Laws

The superyacht Ocean Emerald stands out in Thai waters, where strict maritime laws usually keep foreign vessels away. Designed by Lord Foster, its bold appearance has sparked strong reactions—some admire it, while others dismiss it as impractical. Unlike most luxury yachts that dock in glamorous hubs like Monaco or Abu Dhabi, this one calls Thailand home.

British-Thai resident Nigel Plaskett took advantage of a short-lived easing of Thailand’s tough yachting rules to register Ocean Emerald locally. The process demanded a fully documented Thai crew, VAT payments, and cooperation with local agents. These steps were unusual for foreign superyachts, which rarely gain approval under the country’s restrictive laws.

The yacht’s design prioritised striking looks over functionality. Storage space is limited, and the top deck was originally left open, exposing it to the elements. Despite these drawbacks, Plaskett uses it for around ten weeks each year, often cruising between Ko Chang and Ko Pha Ngan. Thailand’s regulations contrast sharply with more welcoming destinations like Monaco or St Barts, where superyachts freely dock. Ocean Emerald remains one of the few exceptions, permitted to operate in Thai waters under special conditions.

The yacht’s presence highlights a rare flexibility in Thailand’s otherwise rigid maritime policies. Plaskett’s registration during a brief regulatory window allowed Ocean Emerald to stay, though its design and operational quirks set it apart. For now, it remains a unique sight along the Thai coast.
