Indian students flock to Russia for medical degrees despite lingering challenges
Russia has become an increasingly popular destination for Indian students, particularly those pursuing medical degrees. By 2025, the country hosted 30,000 Indian learners—a rise of 35% from the previous year. Yet, despite this growth, challenges remain for both students and universities adapting to new demands. Most Indian students in Russia enrol in medical programmes, drawn by the country's reputation in this field. Experts predict another 20-30% increase in their numbers in the coming years. However, India's ongoing reforms in medical education may push Russian institutions to update their curricula to stay competitive.
Language and career prospects also shape student choices. An English-speaking environment is now a key factor for Indian applicants selecting Russian universities. Many also prioritise internship opportunities and clear job pathways after graduation. Russia currently attracts less than 2% of India's total outbound students, far behind Western nations. In 2025, over half of the complaints from Indian students studying abroad were directed at Russia, though specific reasons for this trend remain unclear. Despite these issues, India remains the second-largest source of international students in Russia, trailing only China.
The number of Indian students in Russia continues to climb, driven largely by medical studies. Yet, as global competition for international learners intensifies, Russian universities may need to address language barriers, curriculum alignment, and employment support. The coming years will show whether these adjustments can sustain growth in student numbers.
