ITA Airways reshapes routes and loyalty as stock struggles persist
ITA Airways is making several operational and strategic changes as it continues to expand within the Lufthansa Group. The airline has recently joined the Miles & More loyalty programme, while also adjusting its route network and testing new cleaning procedures to improve efficiency. Meanwhile, its stock performance remains under pressure, reflecting broader market concerns.
From April 1, ITA Airways officially became part of the Miles & More frequent flyer programme. The move aims to create stronger ties within the Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance, offering passengers a more unified travel experience. Industry sources describe the integration as a key step toward improving global recognition and service consistency.
The airline is also adjusting its winter schedule for 2026/27, adding a new direct route from Munich to Rovaniemi, Finland, starting in December. This expansion comes as ITA Airways reallocates capacity from suspended Middle Eastern routes, including Dubai and Beirut, which will remain paused until at least March 28. The freed-up resources are now being directed toward Asian and African destinations.
In an effort to speed up operations, ITA Airways is trialling a 'light cleaning' approach on around 20 European short-haul routes until March. Instead of standard cabin cleaning in economy class, crew members will visually check seatback pockets for waste and clean only when necessary. Planes staying overnight at outstations will still receive a full clean. If successful, this method could permanently reduce turnaround times and lower external service costs.
On the financial side, the airline's stock has struggled, closing at €7.32 on Friday after a 4.07% drop. Over the past month, shares have fallen by more than 20%, trading well below the 200-day moving average of €8.01. Analysts suggest that a lasting recovery will depend on clear financial improvements.
ITA Airways is pushing ahead with changes to boost efficiency and customer experience. The Miles & More integration, route adjustments, and cleaning trials all signal a focus on streamlining operations. However, the airline's stock performance highlights ongoing challenges that will need concrete results to reverse.
