Kazakhstan’s 660 artisans stitch history with record-breaking quilted masterpiece
Almaty’s Medeu Skating Rink became the stage for a historic cultural celebration last week. The Alaman Qurak–2025 project brought together 660 artisans from across Kazakhstan to honour traditional Kazakh patchwork craftsmanship. Their collaboration resulted in a record-breaking quilted blanket, showcasing the skill and unity of the nation’s women.
The initiative was launched by Nurgul Abaihan, a resident of Tansyk village in Ayagoz District. Her vision aimed to highlight the beauty of qurak artistry while reinforcing the cultural heritage of Kazakhstan. The event drew participants from every region, including 34 artisans from Eastern Kazakhstan alone.
The Alaman Qurak–2025 project now stands as a testament to Kazakhstan’s artistic traditions. The record-setting blanket, crafted by hundreds of skilled women, will preserve the legacy of qurak for future generations. Organisers hope the achievement will inspire further appreciation of the country’s rich cultural practices.
