Koh Rong’s untouched beaches shine as Cambodia’s hidden paradise

Koh Rong, a small island off Cambodia’s Sihanoukville coast, is gaining attention as a standout destination in South East Asia. Known for its stunning beaches and lively atmosphere, it offers a mix of natural beauty and rustic charm. Yet behind its appeal, questions remain about its future development and the impact on local communities.

The island’s beaches are often compared to those in Southern Thailand, drawing visitors with their white sand and clear waters. At night, the surrounding sea glows with bioluminescent plankton, creating a magical sight for tourists. By day, activities range from kayaking and jungle trekking to stand-up paddleboarding and boat tours, which include fishing and snorkelling.

Koh Rong continues to attract travellers with its unspoilt landscapes and vibrant nightlife. For now, its infrastructure stays basic, and its future as a high-end beach destination remains uncertain. The balance between development and preserving its natural appeal will shape what comes next for the island and its residents.
