LA Religious Education Congress unites 10,000 in a message of mercy and hope

The 70th LA Religious Education Congress (RECongress) kicked off on February 20, 2023, under the theme Wrapped in Mercy, Hope Renewed! This year's main event drew nearly 10,000 young attendees, including middle-schoolers for the first time. The opening ceremony also celebrated Lunar New Year traditions, reflecting the diversity of participants from across the globe.

The congress began with a focus on mercy and self-forgiveness, setting a reflective tone for the gatherings. Bishop Marc V. Trudeau addressed middle-schoolers during Youth Day, urging them to embrace a sacrifice of love in their faith. His words resonated with the 1,300 younger participants, who joined nearly 8,000 high-schoolers in the day's activities.

Bishop Brian Nunes later spoke to high-schoolers, describing the cross as the ultimate symbol of love—a choice rather than just a feeling. His message aligned with the broader theme of finding strength in faith and compassion.

Among the attendees was Virginia Medellin, a parishioner from Mary Immaculate Church in Pacoima, who has attended every RECongress since 1964. Her decades-long participation highlights the event's enduring role in spiritual renewal for many.

The congress also featured personal stories of resilience, including Yolanda Chavez, a volunteer with the LA Archdiocese's Office of Religious Education. She shared her experience of facing deportation and discovering mercy through her faith.

A message from Pope Leo XIV, delivered by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, encouraged participants to open their hearts to God's love. He emphasised finding comfort in Jesus' Eucharistic presence, reinforcing the congress's central message of hope.

Delegates travelled from 48 US states and countries as far as Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Japan, Spain, and the UK, showcasing the event's international reach.

The 2026 RECongress brought together thousands for prayer, reflection, and community. With a theme centred on mercy and renewal, the event offered both young and long-time attendees a space for spiritual growth. The inclusion of middle-schoolers and global participants marked another milestone in its 70-year history.
