Latest Information on Southeast Asia's Digital Nomad Visas [2024 Edition]

Southeast Asia is becoming an increasingly popular destination for digital nomads, offering a combination of affordable cities, excellent wifi connections, and now, a series of new visas designed specifically for remote jobs.

Malaysia's Digital Nomad Visa

Malaysia's Professional Visit Pass, officially known as the digital nomad visa, caters to digital professionals such as digital marketers, IT consultants, programmers, and content creators. This visa allows stays of up to 12 months (renewable) with a minimum income of $24,000.

Thailand's Digital Nomad Visas

Thailand offers three categories of digital nomad visas: Work from Thailand, Wealthy Global Citizens, and Wealthy Pensioners.

The Work from Thailand category requires nomads to earn at least $80,000 annually or $40,000 with a Master’s Degree while working at an approved company. The Wealthy Global Citizens must prove they have $1 million in assets and make a $500,000 investment in Thailand.

The upcoming Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa under the Work-From-Thailand Professional category offers up to 10 years of stay with a bank balance requirement of 500,000 THB and favourable tax rules for stays under 180 days.

Philippines' Digital Nomad Visa

The Philippines plans to implement a digital nomad visa in June 2023, allowing remote jobs to live in the country for up to two years. Digital nomad visa holders will not be considered tax residents and will not owe local income tax to the country.

Indonesia's Digital Nomad Visas

Indonesia offers the Remote Worker Visa (E33G Program) allowing remote employees to live in Indonesia for up to two years. The Indonesia B211A Visa allows remote jobs to live in Indonesia for 6 months.

Sri Lanka's Digital Nomad Visa

Sri Lanka will launch a digital nomad visa for freelancers and remote jobs, allowing them to live in the country for one year with the opportunity to renew it. The minimum income requirement is $2,000 USD per month, and there is a flat fee of $500 for the visa application.

Upcoming Digital Nomad Visas in Southeast Asia

In 2025, Thailand is expected to launch the Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa under the Work-From-Thailand Professional category, offering up to 10 years of stay with a bank balance requirement of 500,000 THB and favourable tax rules for stays under 180 days. Malaysia’s digital nomad visa will also be introduced, allowing stays up to 12 months (renewable) with a minimum income of $24,000 and eligibility for various digital professions. Taiwan’s digital nomad visa, launched in January 2025, targets visa-free nationalities and requires proof of income depending on age and health insurance.

These visas allow digital nomads to settle down and call a country home in Southeast Asia. With longer residence permits than other similar visas, Southeast Asia is quickly becoming a top choice for digital nomads seeking a change of scenery and a new place to work remotely.
