In the sun-drenched paradise of Los Cabos, Mexico, the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) has awarded a record-breaking number of Blue Flag beaches for the 2024-2025 season. Los Cabos, renowned for its pristine coastline, boasts an impressive 25 Blue Flag beaches, making it the region with the most in the country.

Among these pristine playas, Los Cabos also holds the distinction of having 17 newly minted Platinum Blue Flag beaches. This prestigious honour is based on cleanliness, services, and sustainability, setting Los Cabos apart as a premier destination for eco-conscious travellers.

While Los Cabos basks in the glory of its Blue and Platinum flags, it's essential to note that these are not the only flags gracing its shores. Safety is paramount, and colour-coded flags like green, yellow, red, white, and black are used to indicate whether it's safe to swim, caution is needed, or the water should be avoided.

Tourists visiting Mexico's beaches are known to occasionally take liberties with clothing, but legal recognition for clothing-optional beaches is limited. At present, only Playa Zipolite in Oaxaca, not La Paz, is Mexico's only officially sanctioned nude beach.

As for La Paz, current evidence suggests that it is not reported to be considering the creation of a nude beach. Any plans for such a development would require formal requests and permits from the appropriate authorities.

In Los Cabos, efforts are underway to maintain the high standards set by the Blue Flag and Platinum awards. Over 300 unauthorized vendors have been removed from local beaches, and only those with proper permits and official uniforms will be allowed to sell goods. New uniforms and ID cards are being issued to the 698 paid-up vendors this summer.

Moreover, new signage is being delivered to some Los Cabos beaches, promoting self-care and safety, and showing the flag system used to update water conditions for swimming or aquatic activities.

Two beaches in Mexico have ever qualified for the A+ designation, the highest achievement obtainable under the Blue Flag banner: Playas Palmilla and Santa María in Los Cabos. This exceptional cleanliness, in addition to meeting international criteria, sets these beaches apart as some of the best in the world.

However, not all is smooth sailing for Los Cabos. Playa del Chileno, a popular and beautiful beach, could be in danger of losing its Blue Flag status due to issues with unlicensed activities and vendors harassing beachgoers.

While La Paz may not be home to a nude beach as of now, the municipality is considering the creation of one between Playas El Saltito and El Carrizalito. If plans move forward, it would mark a new chapter in Mexico's approach to beach culture.

For those seeking a more traditional beach experience, Los Cabos offers a plethora of options, from adults-only resorts where clothing is optional in the Riviera Maya, to the pristine, Blue Flag-certified beaches that continue to draw visitors from around the world.
