Jubilee at the 'Lego Grandma' - 150th ramp completed - 'Lego Grandma' Builds 150th Wheelchair Ramp to Transform European Accessibility
Rita Ebel, known as the 'Lego Grandma', reached a major milestone on Monday, March 6, 2023. Her team delivered their 150th Lego wheelchair ramp, this time at a Vietnamese restaurant in Hanau. What began as a small project has grown into a widespread effort to improve accessibility standards across Europe.
Ebel first started building the ramps with modest expectations. She never imagined the project would expand so far. Over three decades ago, a car accident left her using a wheelchair, sparking her passion for accessibility.
Today, her team of nine volunteers—including family members—assembles each ramp in a workshop in downtown Hanau. Funding comes entirely from donations. While most ramps are installed at businesses, they also create custom designs for children in wheelchairs.
The ramps serve more than just wheelchair users. People with walkers and parents pushing strollers also benefit from the bright, sturdy structures. From Germany to France, Italy, and Spain, Ebel's Lego ramps have appeared in cities across multiple countries. Each installation helps raise awareness about inclusion and barrier-free access.
The 150th ramp marks a significant achievement for Ebel and her team. Their work continues to make public spaces more accessible for many. With ongoing support, the project is set to grow even further.
