Librarian Launches Innovative Programs to Spark Freedom of Speech Discussions

A dedicated school librarian has launched two innovative programs to engage students in critical discussions about freedom of speech, censorship, and voting rights. The One Book, One School initiative and the Freedom Walk program have sparked enthusiasm among students and the community.

The librarian, who created the Freedom Walk program in 2023, leads students through five interactive stations during lunch periods. Here, they learn about their constitutional rights, censorship terms, library book purchasing processes, information policies, and the importance of voting.

The One Book, One School initiative, launched this year, focuses on Joelle Charbonneau's 'Verify'. Weekly discussions and an essay contest encourage students to explore censorship issues in a digital world. A panel with local officials also delves into their role in protecting community access to information.

In 2024, the librarian expanded the program with an evening event called Empowering Voters. More than 50 students and community members attended, participating in a panel discussion, voter registration, and a sample voting machine experience to understand the voting process.

These initiatives have not only educated students about their rights and the role of libraries in safeguarding them but have also fostered advocacy efforts. The librarian urges colleagues to present such information to patrons, empowering them to engage in discussions and advocacy about the critical role of libraries in society.
