Lisbon's allure grows with record visitors and budget-friendly travel options

Lisbon remains one of Europe's most sought-after destinations, blending ancient history with sunny beaches. The Portuguese capital continues to attract record numbers of visitors, with cheap flights and rich cultural sites drawing millions each year.

Travellers from the US can now fly nonstop to Lisbon at competitive prices. In April, round-trip tickets from New York start at $498 with AirPortugal, while Boston departures begin at $517 with TAP Portugal or Delta Airlines. European routes also offer convenience, with at least one daily direct flight from Frankfurt, such as TP 575 departing at 06:00.

The city itself boasts a mix of historic landmarks and coastal charm. Castelo de São Jorge, a fortress dating back to 200 BC, provides sweeping views of Lisbon for €15 per person. Nearby, the intricate Jérónimos Monastery showcases Portuguese Gothic Manueline architecture, with entry priced at €18. For a lively atmosphere, Praça do Comércio, a grand riverside plaza, serves as a hub for both locals and tourists.

Beaches lie just beyond the city centre, easily reached by train. Praia de Cruz Quebrada, the closest stretch of sand, sits 12km away and costs just €1 to access. Further along the coast, Cascais—a former fishing village—offers calm waters and scenic shorelines, with train fares from Lisbon at €2.30.

Portugal welcomed over 30 million visitors in 2024, with Lisbon leading as the top destination. Forecasts suggest even higher numbers in 2025, with 33 million travellers expected. Affordable flights, historic sites, and nearby beaches ensure the city's enduring appeal.
