Maharashtra launches strict crackdown on illegal cattle transport before Bakri Eid

Maharashtra has launched a strict statewide crackdown on illegal cattle transport and slaughter ahead of Bakri Eid. From May 25 to May 28, 2026, authorities will conduct intensive inspections to prevent cow smuggling and enforce animal welfare laws. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik issued a strong warning against illegal activities involving cattle. The Transport Department has ordered a special inspection drive across Maharashtra, involving RTOs, border check posts, and transport officials. Vehicles found carrying cattle without proper permits will be seized immediately. Inspections will focus on overcrowding and inhumane conditions, which often worsen during festival periods.

Special checkpoints have been set up in Mumbai, border areas, and other key routes. Teams will verify permits and ensure compliance with animal welfare rules. The operation includes local police, traffic police, the Animal Husbandry Department, and cow protection groups. The state has also formed dedicated squads to block cattle supplies to illegal slaughterhouses. Offenders will face severe legal consequences. Maharashtra’s indigenous cow holds the title of *Rajyamata*, reflecting its cultural and religious importance to the Hindu community.

The four-day enforcement drive aims to curb illegal cattle trade and slaughter. Authorities will monitor transport routes closely and take swift action against violations. The crackdown aligns with Maharashtra’s commitment to protecting cattle and upholding animal welfare standards.
