Annett Groeschner's Snapshot Postcards - Mainz Unveils Typographic Postcards Capturing City Life in Bold Fonts

Mainz has launched a new project featuring ten typographic postcards, each capturing a moment from the city in a single sentence. Bestselling author Annett Gröschner, the city’s writer-in-residence, created the series to reflect everyday scenes from the market square and beyond. One of the postcards even bears her own words.

Gröschner drew inspiration from Mainz’s bustling market square to design the postcards. Each one presents a simple observation, free from opinions or images, in a variety of fonts and colours. The project also honours Johannes Gutenberg’s printing legacy, tying the modern designs to the city’s history.

From nearly 50 submissions, Gröschner selected nine observations by local contributors. She then added her own postcard to complete the set. The final collection now offers a snapshot of life in Mainz, told through the eyes of its residents. The postcards are available for free at locations across the city. Anyone can pick them up and take home a piece of Mainz’s daily life, framed in bold typography.

The initiative brings together local voices and typographic art. Gröschner’s role as city writer-in-residence helped shape the project, blending literature with public engagement. The postcards will remain accessible until supplies run out.
